Nearly 200 people have been placed under medical observation in Russia’s Irkutsk region in eastern Siberia following the death of an employee at an anti-plague research institute. Local reports suggested the woman may have been exposed to the bacterium that causes plague after a test tube broke while she was working. She was later hospitalised with severe pneumonia and died. Russian authorities, however, have not confirmed either the reported laboratory accident or that she contracted plague. Russia’s public health watchdog says the woman was diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown origin and that testing found no microorganisms linked to her work. Officials say those being monitored have shown no signs of illness. The case has also drawn attention in Washington, with a Trump administration official telling Axios that the White House is aware of the reports, is monitoring the situation and is “assessing options.” #Plagueinrussianews #russia #plague #irkutsk #siberia #whitehouse #health #
