The Conservatives have opened their conference in Birmingham with a new statement of principles from Kemi Badenoch. It acknowledges that previous Tory governments promised to lower immigration but failed to deliver. That record remains a major obstacle as the party tries to win back voters, with Reform UK continuing to challenge the Conservatives over their 14 years in power. Badenoch’s conference speech will test how directly she addresses those failures and what she offers in response. Political strategist Peter Barnes says she should state plainly that the Tories failed on immigration, then set out measurable promises so voters can judge whether the party has changed.
