The escalation came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, arriving amid air-raid sirens and explosions. Merz announced additional German military and energy support for Ukraine, including long-range weapons, combat drones, satellite technology and funding for critical energy infrastructure. Germany and Ukraine also discussed joint drone production and efforts to accelerate Ukraine's path towards European Union membership. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is ready to participate in a proposed trilateral meeting involving the United States and Russia, potentially by the end of October.
