What if action sometimes begins before we consciously decide to act? Actor and director Dimitris Lalos explores this question through theatre, neuroscience, psychology and philosophy. Starting from research on the relationship between conscious intention and action, he turns to the work of influential acting practitioners and to the psychology of flow to examine moments when thought recedes and action seems to emerge naturally. On stage, these can be the moments when a performance feels most alive: the actor stops observing and controlling every move, impulse and action become connected, and the experience unfolds without being forced. From acting practice to the Dionysian experience of ancient Greek theatre, Dimitris traces different ways of understanding this surrender of control. His talk asks whether learning to trust the flow of action might offer a lesson not only for performers, but for how we experience life itself.
