A major rescue operation is underway in the Black Sea after a cargo vessel sailing from Ukraine towards Italy caught fire following an explosion near Romania. The vessel, identified as the Royad Mammadov, was around 20 nautical miles from the Romanian coast when the incident occurred. Romanian authorities say the captain was injured while 13 crew members remain unaccounted for. Multiple rescue vessels have been deployed to search the surrounding waters as investigators work to determine what caused the blast. Local reports have raised the possibility that the ship was struck by a drone, but Romanian authorities have not confirmed that account and there is currently no official determination that the explosion resulted from an attack. The location adds particular sensitivity to the incident. Romania is a NATO member, and if investigators establish that a weapon struck the commercial vessel, attention will turn to determining where it came from. #blacksea #romania #ukraine #nato #cargos
