After the US joined World War One, former president Theodore Roosevelt offered to rejoin the army and lead tens of thousands of American volunteers to go to France and fight Germany. However, even though Roosevelt, his men, the French and Congress wanted him to go, he never actually went and spent the War in the US being grumpy he wasn't charging into German trenches.
