The Red Sea is becoming a battlefield, and Yemen is at the centre of it. The Iran-backed Houthis control large stretches of Yemen’s coastline and are advancing towards the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait. In response, Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched Operation Dawn of Yemen, backed by Saudi Arabia and supported by U.S. intelligence. Saudi Arabia says around 100 fighter jets joined the opening strikes, targeting Houthi positions and supporting government forces on the ground. The offensive aims to reclaim territory, restore state authority and push back the Houthis. But the stakes go far beyond Yemen. Taiz, the country’s most populous governorate, is under growing pressure, while Houthi attacks threaten Saudi oil infrastructure. With both Bab al-Mandeb and Hormuz facing disruption, global trade and energy supplies could be at risk.
