Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a runoff after Flavio Bolsonaro finished ahead of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the first round. With neither candidate securing the required majority, voters will return to the polls on October 25. The result defied pre-election polling, which had consistently shown Lula ahead. The contest also carries wider regional implications, with Donald Trump closely watching the race and the Bolsonaro family maintaining ties with the US president.
