A 28-year-old laboratory worker, Darya Shipilova, has died in Siberia with authorities suspecting plague as the cause of death, though Russia's health watchdog claims she died from pneumonia of unknown aetiology. The incident at an anti-plague institute has resulted in more than 200 people and five hospitals being placed under strict three-week quarantine, with unconfirmed reports suggesting she dropped a test tube carrying the disease. The Kremlin is downplaying the incident whilst international officials monitor the situation closely, noting that plague has been absent from Europe for more than 50 years.
