AMD just revealed a major VRAM breakthrough for ray tracing that could dramatically reduce the GPU memory future games need. Using a new technique called tetrahedral cages, AMD demonstrated a complex ray-traced forest where BVH memory usage dropped from as much as 80GB to just 1.7GB, around 98% less VRAM. In this video, we break down how AMD's new ray tracing technology works, why BVH acceleration structures consume so much VRAM, and how tetrahedral cages could make highly detailed, animated ray-traced environments possible on normal gaming GPUs. AMD demonstrated the technology on a Radeon RX 9070 XT, ray tracing roughly 500 million animated triangles per frame while maintaining over 60 FPS at 1080p. The technique also works with standard DirectX Raytracing, although it's currently research rather than a shipping Radeon feature. We also examine China's Lisuan LX 7G100 gaming GPU and its first major independent benchmarks, including comparisons against the RX 580, RTX 2060, RTX 3060,
