The Mecca Defence Pact has been activated as Saudi Arabia faces escalating attacks from Yemen’s Houthis. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye have agreed to move toward the rapid deployment of military forces and capabilities to the kingdom under their collective defence framework. The decision follows an emergency meeting in Riyadh as Saudi-backed Yemeni forces intensify their offensive against the Houthis near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Pakistan has pledged to defend Saudi Arabia, while Field Marshal Asim Munir was among the senior officials involved in the Riyadh meeting. However, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Saudi forces are currently the ones conducting combat operations against the Houthis, with Pakistani and Turkish forces maintaining a defensive role. The move marks the first operational activation of the Mecca pact since it was signed in August.
