On April 13, 2029, asteroid Apophis will pass only about 20,000 miles above Earth — closer than many satellites in geosynchronous orbit. It will not hit us. But Earth will change it. During the encounter, our planet’s gravity will pull, twist and stretch the 1,100-foot asteroid, potentially changing its spin, moving loose material across its surface and permanently rewriting its orbit around the Sun. In this video we look at how close Apophis will actually come, why it was once considered one of the most dangerous asteroids ever discovered, and what scientists hope to learn when Earth effectively performs a natural experiment on it. NASA’s OSIRIS-APEX and ESA-JAXA’s Ramses are being prepared to study the encounter. Apophis will arrive as one asteroid. A few hours later, it could leave with a different orbit, different rotation and a newly rearranged surface. -- DISCUSSIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA Commercial Purposes: insanecuriositybusiness@gmail.com Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@insane
