How does NFL Films create some of the most iconic images in sports? On this episode of Frame By Frame, I sit down with NFL Films cinematographer Hannah Epstein, DP of HBO’s Hard Knocks with the Seattle Seahawks, to break down how she and the NFL Films crew capture football at the highest level. Hannah takes us behind the camera of some of my favorite sequences from this season of Hard Knocks — including the JSN “Silver Surfer” sequence, Sam Darnold’s slow-motion spiral shots, and how the crew captured the look and feel of summer in Seattle. We also get into the massive operation behind Hard Knocks, shooting with the ARRI Alexa 35 Extreme at 660fps, the legendary NFL Films 33:1 lens, finding new ways to photograph football, and what it takes to build a career as a sports cinematographer. Hannah also shares her journey from being rejected twice from the NFL Films internship program to eventually becoming a staff cinematographer and DP. CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro: Hannah Epstein, NFL Films
