At 9:20am on October 7 2023, 16 20-something Nova festivalgoers, fleeing the biggest terror attack in Israel’s history, scrambled into a large fluorescent-yellow dumpster and buried themselves deep beneath the piles of rubbish. For approximately three hours they hid silently, praying they wouldn’t be spotted as dozens of armed men from Gaza roamed the festival grounds scouring for victims. As the sun beat down and the rubbish stewed, they heard the hellish screams of people around them begging for mercy as they were mutilated, raped or executed. Their terrifying ordeal was recorded in desperate text messages sent to family and loved ones many miles away.
