Iran has summoned France’s ambassador in Tehran, accusing Paris of violating protesters’ rights during a crackdown on student demonstrations. Tehran pointed to arrests, tear gas and alleged police violence, while accusing France of applying a double standard to protests in Iran and Europe. The diplomatic clash comes after France strongly criticised Iran’s response to anti-government protests earlier this year. As demonstrations continue across French cities, the dispute has turned into a wider confrontation over human rights, protest rights and France’s credibility.
