Surgery to remove a tumour took most of Dr Imogen Brook's tongue after she was diagnosed with cancer at 26 years old. It left her with speech problems, which she said caused strangers to look at her “in fear” when she spoke for the first time. But after being fitted with a bespoke artificial tongue on the NHS, she tells Richard and Ranvir of her joy to be able to be understood by strangers, colleagues and medical staff. To help her regain clear speech, experts from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust have spent months working on the custom-made prosthetic, which was designed for her to create the maximum number of sounds.
