Many people view archaeology as a very rigid and carefully planned subject. But Mr. Martin sees it differently. He once paused his routine academic work to go on a ten-month journey across thousands of miles. Through this experience, he proved that the most exciting parts of life cannot be planned in advance. Martin Goffriller is an archaeologist, educator, and overland traveler with a background in medieval architectural history and Silk Road archaeology. Moving beyond traditional academic research, he traded institutional schedules for thousands of miles on the open road, embarking on an epic 10-month overland expedition across Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia to China. In his talks, Martin explores what happens when meticulous planning collides with the unpredictable realities of travel, uncovering timeless human stories across ancient landscapes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more a
