Germany’s opposition criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Bundestag on Wednesday over continued military and civilian support for Ukraine, arguing that billions of euros should instead address domestic needs including infrastructure, pensions and energy costs. AfD lawmaker Markus Frohnmaier attacked Merz over his recent announcement of around €1 billion in new military assistance and €350 million for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while CDU lawmaker Knut Abraham defended the policy as being in Germany’s interest and accused the AfD of undermining Ukraine’s right to self-determination. Die Linke lawmaker Lea Reisner also criticised the government, arguing that German business interests were influencing its Ukraine policy and questioning oversight of civilian funding. The government says Germany has provided more than €43.3 billion in bilateral civilian support since Russia’s invasion, while military support provided or earmarked for 2026 and beyond totals around €57.6 billion.
