Hundreds of protesters gathered in Madrid on Wednesday for a vigil for Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman whose eviction from the home where she had lived for 71 years became a focal point of Spain’s housing crisis. Abascal died at a Madrid hospital on Oct. 7, two weeks after her eviction and after being admitted to hospital on the day she was removed from her home. Protesters surrounded her photograph with candles and chanted “These aren’t deaths. They’re murders!”, while others staged a sit-in and called for greater housing protections. Her case has fuelled protests across Spain as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government faces pressure over housing access and inequality. Spain is due to hold a snap general election on Nov. 29. #spain #madrid #madridprotest #housingcrisis #spainhousingcrisis #maricarmenabascal #housingprotest #eviction #housing #pedrosanchez #sanchez #spainpolitics #protest #europe #europeprotests #housingjustice #breakingnews #worldnews #timesnowworld Stay
