Is the US now more a “gerontocracy” than democracy? The president and many key powerbrokers are in their 70s and 80s. Although half of the population is 40 or younger, only a fifth of Washington’s lawmakers are under 40. Legal scholar and author Samuel Moyn tells DW’s Hannah Hummel that the US is now a government being run by and for the elderly, at the expense of younger citizens. He argues the unfair system is a danger to democracy itself. And while the November midterm elections are expected to reshape Congress, Moyn says, it’s unlikely to make a dent in this disparity. #usa #gerontocrazy #democrazy #trump #dwcurrentaffairs Chapters: 00:00 Proof of life in the seat of power 01:23 Meet Samuel Moyn, ‘Gerontocracy in America’ author 02:38 80-year-olds representing a much younger nation 03:22 The unelected power of cognitive decline 04:00 Grim reaper is the swing voter 05:05 Growing wealth, power gap between young and old 06:30 Can younger voters turn the Titanic? 07:39 Younger lea
