China and the Philippines traded accusations after a medical evacuation near Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed South China Sea, with Beijing defending its coast guard's actions and warning Manila against alleged provocations. China's Foreign Ministry said the China Coast Guard acted in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations and allowed Philippine personnel to evacuate an injured serviceman by small boat on humanitarian grounds. The Philippine Coast Guard, however, said Chinese vessels obstructed and delayed the emergency evacuation for nearly 10 hours, alleging water-cannon use and dangerous manoeuvres during the operation. The injured Philippine Navy serviceman was evacuated from the grounded BRP Sierra Madre, which serves as a Philippine military outpost at Ayungin Shoal, also known as Ren’ai Jiao in China.
