New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a federal immigration officer shot and wounded a Dominican man during an arrest in New York City. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on Thursday in Marble Hill, a Manhattan neighborhood bordering the Bronx. Mamdani said he spoke by phone with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, urging them to halt immigration enforcement operations in the city. He also said his efforts to secure the release of the man who was shot were unsuccessful. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the man as Oscar Belgal and outlined two prior arrests, including a 2023 case in which he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny and received five years of probation, and a 2025 controlled-substance sale case that remains pending. The shooting has intensified the debate over federal immigration enforcement in New York. #zohranmamdani #ice #nyc #newyork #i
