Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali has won the Holborn and St Pancras parliamentary by-election in London, defeating Green Party leader Zack Polanski in a closely watched contest. Abdi-Wali secured 12,292 votes against Polanski’s 8,928, giving Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s Labour Party a boost as it seeks to rebuild support among urban voters. Polanski acknowledged the defeat but vowed to grow the Green Party’s movement and continue campaigning on rent controls, climate action and nationalising Thames Water.
