The Trump administration has announced sweeping new sanctions against the International Criminal Court, escalating its confrontation with an institution Washington has branded a “rogue court”. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the ICC must end what Washington considers its threats or face further action. The move has sparked international criticism. Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada and Japan have issued a joint statement opposing the sanctions. The United Nations has warned of serious consequences for international criminal justice, while the European Union has pledged support for the court. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has welcomed Washington's decision, accusing the ICC of acting as a political institution. With a six-month window before the measures take effect, the confrontation could become a major diplomatic test between Washington and its closest partners. #trump #icc #internationalcriminalcourt #marcorubi
