I recently had the opportunity to direct Sam Darnold in a new campaign for Alaska Airlines. In this first episode of Director’s Notebook, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the commercial—from the original agency brief and director’s treatment through pre-production, storyboarding, shooting on a large-scale projection wall, and directing Sam on set. This was one of the largest commercial sets I’ve directed, with nearly 100 people involved. I break down what worked, what I learned, and how I handled the pressure of making creative decisions when things inevitably changed on set.
