A crude supertanker is burning in the Strait of Hormuz after reportedly striking a mine, with Iran’s IRGC claiming the vessel ignored navigation rules while attempting to leave the strategic waterway through an “unauthorised” route. According to an IRGC statement carried by Tasnim, the tanker had switched off its navigation and positioning systems before the explosion. That account has not been independently verified, while the vessel’s identity, crew condition and the origin of the reported mine remain unclear. The IRGC has used the incident to issue a warning to other commercial vessels, saying a “terrible fire is the end result” for tankers that ignore security rules in the Strait. A reported mine strike carries wider implications because uncertainty over additional mines can disrupt surrounding shipping lanes. Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying major volumes of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf to international markets. #iran #irgc #straitofhorm
