“I saw a very big wave coming in. In my head, I was like, ‘That’s it.’” CNA cameraman Erwin Chua feared the worst while filming Nepal’s rescue teams searching for victims of the deadly August flood. In Chitwan district, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force officers paddled for almost three hours in turbulent waters to reach river islands where bodies might have washed ashore. There, they faced treacherous, muddy terrain and the threat of wild animals. For CNA senior producer Jonathan Chia, it was “probably the riskiest shoot” he has ever done. But it was the rescuers’ determination that stayed with him. The CNA crew witnessed how officers calmly and methodically recovered bodies, carefully wrapping and carrying them back for identification. “The rescue team has to go back in every day. It just makes me admire their courage, their determination and their selflessness,” said Chia. Watch the full documentary, Nepal: The Flood’s Wake, for more on the recovery operation. #cnainsider #
