Ground has been broken on a new $16bn oil refinery in Lamu, on Kenya’s northern coast. Speaking at the launch, the Nigerian billionaire behind the project Aliko Dangote lauded it, saying “this is Africa coming together to build Africa”. But not everyone agrees. Activists in Lamu claim locals weren’t consulted on the development. They also say haven’t been given any assurances over the potential environmental and social impact of one of the county’s largest ever industrial developments.
