Scotland's windswept moors are an iconic feature of the landscape, but beneath them lies one of the world's most vital and overlooked ecosystems. Once a dirty fuel, the ancient peatlands of Scotland are in fact a natural superpower. Holding more carbon than all of the UK's forests combined, these boggy landscapes have a critical yet under-appreciated role to play in the drive to prevent catastrophic global warming. In Scotland, where peatlands cover more than 20% of the land and store around 1.6 billion tonnes of carbon, ambitious restoration programs led by organizations including Peatland ACTION and NatureScot are working to repair these vital ecosystems.
