Attorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian break down a Trump campaign ad from 2024 that is back on television in September 2026 with its campaign logo and call to action cut and a new closing line reading "Paid for by the U.S. Government" — and explain why that disclaimer doesn't make it legal and arguably makes the case against it stronger. The ad has Trump vowing to "demolish the deep state," "expel the warmongers from our government," and "rout the fake news media," which Brian and Shant note is ironic coming from an administration prosecuting a war in Iran. Brian explains that Congress writes into annual appropriations bills a ban on using federal funds for "publicity or propaganda" within the United States, and that the Hatch Act, which doesn't cover the president, still reaches White House staff and other executive branch employees who produced or placed the ads. Poynter reports more than $1 million has likely been spent, Public Citizen has filed complaints with the Government
