A planned livestream of a United States military firing squad execution has triggered calls for the government to block access to the footage in Australia. US defence secretary Pete Hegseth has declared that the 3 December execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former US Army Major who killed 13 people and wounded dozens more in a 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will be public and available to watch online. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said she's written to the eSafety commissioner and communications minister, asking them to stop any livestreams of the execution and fine social media platforms that fail to block them. One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has also condemned the plan, calling it "Roman amphitheatre stuff". A government spokesperson said Australians “expect that this content won't appear on their screens” and that “platforms have a responsibility to meet those expectations”.
