The ACCC has launched federal court proceedings against Australia's largest egg supplier Sunny Queen and 11 other major producers, alleging they operated a cartel for six years to manipulate production, supply and prices of cage, free-range and organic eggs. The competition watchdog claims the companies coordinated anti-competitive decisions instead of competing independently, with allegations that Sunny Queen also prevented rival Kinross from supplying major supermarkets. Sunny Queen has denied the allegations and intends to defend the proceedings, while Australians now consume a record 282 eggs per person annually.
