Red imported fire ants have been discovered in a shipping container yard at Strathfield South in Sydney's inner west, prompting a biosecurity alert across up to 10 surrounding suburbs. The potentially deadly insects, which arrived from overseas via Port Botany, are believed to have spread, triggering immediate property searches within a 500-metre radius and extended surveillance out to two kilometres. Businesses including Bunnings will require permits to move products like plants, soil and mulch, while authorities have launched a two-year biosecurity surveillance program to eradicate the invasive species.
