A former Ukrainian military officer is due to stand trial in Germany over the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines linking Russia and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea. The suspect, identified in German proceedings as Serhii K., faces charges including causing an explosion, property damage and disrupting public services, as well as an allegation involving complicity in war crimes. German prosecutors allege that the operation used a yacht departing from Rostock and involved explosives placed near Denmark's Bornholm island. The case has renewed scrutiny of possible Ukrainian involvement in the sabotage, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied that Kyiv was responsible. Security expert Joachim Weber said the allegations could raise difficult political questions for Germany, a major supporter of Ukraine. The German government has declined to comment on the case before a verdict, while Russia has also called for accountability over the pipeline
