Labor has serious questions to answer. UAE prosecutors allege the accused Flydubai hijacker began his slide into extremism while studying in Melbourne and had links to people associated with MyCentre. Yet the organisation’s umbrella body received more than $68,000 in federal funding. I asked whether Labor sought advice from ASIO or the AFP before handing over taxpayers’ money. I asked whether any funded organisations are on a terror watch list. The minister gave no answer. With 94 per cent of last year’s multicultural grant funding going to Labor electorates and Australia’s terrorism threat level still “probable”, Australians deserve transparency. Labor must open the books, explain its checks and stop treating taxpayers’ money like a political slush fund.
