Zach Pope reviews CRYSTAL LAKE, Peacock and A24’s new FRIDAY THE 13TH prequel series starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees — and this is a GREAT return to one of horror’s most iconic franchises. CRYSTAL LAKE takes us back before Jason Voorhees became the unstoppable slasher icon we know. But what impressed me most? THIS SERIES ACTUALLY EXPANDS THE MYTHOLOGY. Instead of relying completely on nostalgia, CRYSTAL LAKE digs deeper into Jason, Pamela Voorhees, the town surrounding the lake and the tragedy that eventually creates everything FRIDAY THE 13TH becomes. At the center is Pamela. And watching this story slowly unravel into the rage of a grieving mother is easily one of the most interesting parts of the series. We already know where Pamela eventually ends up. That isn’t the mystery. The interesting part is watching HOW somebody reaches that point. Grief. Paranoia. Anger. The belief that her son may somehow still be out there. And a community where something clear
