France has intercepted an oil tanker in the Indian Ocean suspected of belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” extending its sanctions-enforcement campaign thousands of kilometres beyond European waters. French forces boarded the Benin-flagged DF Peak south of Réunion, diverted the vessel and escorted it to an anchorage while authorities opened a judicial investigation. President Emmanuel Macron said the tanker was suspected of sailing under a false flag and involvement in illegal fuel transportation, adding that France would fight illicit trafficking “wherever” it occurs. Western governments accuse Russia of using tankers with opaque ownership, changing registrations and flags to keep oil exports moving despite sanctions imposed over the Ukraine war. The DF Peak’s suspected connection to that network remains under investigation. France has previously intercepted vessels including the Deyna and Grinch.
