A coroner has found the 2022 death of eight-year-old Amrita Lanka at Monash Children's Hospital was preventable. The child presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, and died within 24 hours from lymphocytic myocarditis after doctors initially suspected gastroenteritis and failed to appropriately escalate her deteriorating condition. Deputy State Coroner Paresa Antoniadis Spanos found the care provided by the relatively junior ED registrar was wanting and contributed to the death, with expert evidence supporting that timely escalation could have saved her life.
