Riot police clashed with student protesters in Montpellier, France, on October 13, deploying tear gas and using spray as demonstrations over school funding, teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms intensified. Footage showed officers pushing demonstrators and blocking their movement as students marched through the streets, waving flags and chanting slogans. France's Interior Ministry reported that 161,500 people took part in nationwide demonstrations, including 41,500 in Paris, more than double the turnout recorded during the previous major day of action. The protests have spread across cities including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Strasbourg, with students, teachers and trade unions demanding greater investment in public education, smaller classes and repairs to school buildings. The government has reportedly pledged 3,000 substitute teachers, but student organisers say more action is needed. The Montpellier clashes have also renewed scrutiny of police crowd-control tactics
