Norway is building the Rogfast tunnel, an extraordinary underwater megaproject that will stretch 27 kilometers beneath the North Sea and plunge 392 meters below sea level, making it one of the deepest and longest undersea road tunnels ever attempted. The $2.4 billion project will replace ferry crossings along Norway’s western coast and cut travel time between Bergen and Stavanger by around 40 minutes, but getting there has already proved difficult, with construction suspended after budget overruns. Engineers are now digging from both ends toward the same meeting point, and the two teams must connect with an astonishing accuracy of just 5 centimeters using laser scanners and digital twins. Even more incredible, the tunnel will include a double roundabout 260 meters below sea level, allowing drivers to reach the island of Kvitsøy without ever coming up for air. With completion planned for 2033, Rogfast could transform Norway’s coastal highway forever, but can engineers pull off this mass
