Mia Shay St Hilaire, 12, died after being served a milkshake with traces of hazelnuts and almonds. She had a serious nut allergy, and it was found the cafe did not properly wash a blender to make her drink. The cafe has been fined £18,000 and its proprietor given 100 hours of community service after admitting six criminal charges related to the Food Safety Act. After Mia’s inquest finished last week, her parents are now calling for a system where food safety has the same weight as hygiene standards.
