Former Democratic Republic of Congo president Joseph Kabila is taking an openly declared leadership role in the country’s insurgency. He will head a new political and military alliance that includes M23 rebels, who control vast swathes of Congo’s mineral-rich east. What does Kabila want, and could his involvement deepen the conflict there or undermine peace efforts? DW correspondent Felix Maringa examines the implications for President Felix Tshisekedi, Rwanda’s role and the millions of civilians affected by the fighting. The announcement comes as the UN sees a “window of opportunity” for peace, despite a worsening security and humanitarian situation.
