Under a new initiative, the City of London Police are introducing "time out zones" at traffic hotspots, dubbed the "sin bin," targeting cyclists who run red lights or jump zebra crossings. Rather than paying a £50 fixed penalty notice, offending cyclists can choose to watch a "hard-hitting" 47-second road safety video displayed on a portable 40-inch television at the roadside. The film features CCTV footage of serious collisions caused by cyclists alongside interviews with two visually impaired women sharing their experiences. Concluding with the strapline "a red light is not a suggestion, it's someone else's safety," the video directly asks riders to reflect on the impact of their actions on pedestrians. This scheme follows a dramatic surge in enforcement, with local police issuing 1,315 fines to cyclists over the past year—more than double the previous year's total amid recent studies revealing that over half of e-bike riders run red lights at major UK junctions.
