In October 1935, the Central Red Army reached Wuqi, Shaanxi Province. KMT troops had been pursuing them for months, and they were closing in fast. Mao Zedong issued a firm order: the enemy must not be allowed to enter the Chinese Soviet base area. And so began the famous "Tail-Cutting" battle. Days before, the Red Army had stopped to rest in Zhangwanzi Village. The Zhang Tingjie family cooked buckwheat noodles for the Red Army leader. That humble bowl is now a cherished part of Long March history.
