Deep beneath the continents, the Earth has been cracking in places where earthquakes shouldn't be possible. A team at Stanford analyzed over 46,000 earthquakes recorded since 1990 and found 459 that started deep in the mantle, beneath solid continents, where rock is supposed to flow instead of snap. For decades, scientists thought this couldn't happen. Now they've mapped these impossible quakes across the globe, and they cluster exactly where continents are being squeezed the hardest.
