What role do ice caps play in the global climate system? In this lesson for high school students, we consider the coldest extreme of our hydrosphere: the poles! At the north pole, which is located in the Arctic Ocean, and the south pole, which is located in Antarctica, temperatures remain cold enough for snow and ice to remain throughout the year. This snow cover affects the global temperature on Earth, and buried within it lie clues to our climate’s past. Scientists hope to use these clues to better understand our climate’s future.
