Why are marine systems ecologically important? In this lesson for high school students, we explore some of the marine systems on Earth. Marine systems contain saltwater and are usually connected in some way to an ocean. At estuaries, rivers empty into oceans. Water then flows through a continental shelf region before flowing to the open ocean. Each marine system has its own unique characteristics and contributes to its ecosystem.
