Palestine’s representative to the United Nations delivers an impassioned address to the UN Security Council, calling for international protection, accountability and Palestinian independence. Citing Mahmoud Darwish’s words about an “incurable disease called hope,” the representative condemns the devastating toll of the Gaza war, raises concerns over Palestinian detainees and settlement expansion, and questions what Palestinians are expected to do to secure their rights and pursue peace. The speech calls for equal recognition of Palestinian and Israeli lives, justice under international law and a future free from occupation.
