In 2006 the nation was captivated by the allegations when three Duke University lacrosse players, David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann were charged with rape. The uproar in Durham County, North Carolina was divided along racial lines. The accuser Crystal Mangum, a part time student at North Carolina Central University who worked as a strip tease dancer and prostitute had accused the three Duke men’s lacrosse players of rape at a fraternity party, igniting a national firestorm. What was later uncovered were several layers of professional misconduct by all facets of local law enforcement and Duke University which saw lawsuits filed, criminal charges filed against other parties, and a sordid tale of lies, deceit and professional corruption.
