The Black Panther Party emerged in Oakland, California in 1966, founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. Publicly, the group presented itself as a revolutionary organization fighting police brutality and systemic racism. They organized armed patrols of police, openly carried firearms, and promoted a Ten-Point Program demanding sweeping political and economic reforms in the United States. While the Panthers gained attention for community programs such as free breakfasts and medical clinics, critics argue the group was also deeply tied to militant rhetoric, internal violence, and criminal activity. Several members were involved in shootouts with police, bombings, and high-profile murders during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Internal purges and violent factional disputes further fractured the organization as it grew. By the mid-1970s the Black Panther Party had largely collapsed amid leadership conflicts, criminal prosecutions, and intense surveillance by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program.
